A extensive search and recovery effort is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost sailboats transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, according to a military release.

The ships had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Political Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified in recent months, with statements from several representatives highlighting the complicated nature of relations.

In response to previous statements, a prominent government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to find the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
