The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
