Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
