Los Angeles Faces Historic High Temperatures Only Days After Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that caused flooding across areas in the city, LA is now seeing unusually high conditions for the end of February.
All-Time High Heat
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer climbed to 91Ā°F (33Ā°C) in central LA, according to meteorologists. This breaks the prior high for February 27th, which was 88Ā°F (31Ā°C) and was set in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were highlighted on official graphics for the region.
Safety Warnings
Authorities cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that battered the state last week. That event unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, causing mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the storm also caused a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests a cooldown will arrive. The heat were expected to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by late Friday.
Other locales that reached ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to see the high eighties.
For the weekend, downtown LA can expect readings in the 80s, with a further cooldown on tap for the start of March.
