Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but events still took place across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the conditions of the plan.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the morning session ended without tangible results, amid differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence heal," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Activist one woman explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population desire the war to end in return for the freedom of the captives.
