India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Multiple areas of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals ten times the safe threshold established by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding safe levels.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed city administration approached the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" ā historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact ā as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".
Court Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited hours throughout the festival.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital showed air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Regional Effects
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Various Pollution Factors
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the city as winter air descends.
Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can result in cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in Delhi.
