We are checking images and video circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
