A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
