Anthony Barry Reveals His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he's dedicated to assist the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a standing through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, and he held roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the peak in his words.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can for optimal success.”
Obsession with Details
Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both challenge limits. Their methods involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. It’s our job to not only anticipate of the trends but to surpass them and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To create a system for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play ought to embody all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information now. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”
Thirst for Improvement
Barry’s hunger to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
The next manager with the club took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
